BIKE racers sprung a 'Gotya' surprise on Keighley ace, Robin Appleyard, when the motorcycle racing fraternity gathered to honour the sport's achievers.
Robin, who retired from racing at the end of last season, was presented with a unique Honda Special Award for services to motorcycle racing at a Gala Dinner held at the National Motorcycle Museum in Birmingham.
The event was attended by 450 top people from the world of Motorcycle Racing.
Robin enjoyed a 17-year career and made his mark as a 125cc specialist at national and Grand Prix level.
He said: "I was completely taken by surprise. to have your achievements recognised by your own colleagues and fellow competitiors is a great honour."
Although he has retired from the track Robin will not be leaving racing. He is due to manage the Honda UK backed Team Colin Appleyard Racing next season.
"With Honda UK's backing I shall be managing a team to challenge for the 125 and 250cc British championships. We've signed three riders with the potential to go all the way, it will be a new challenge for me and 1999 promises to be very exciting indeed," Robin said.
