Bradford firm Totty Construction has totted up contracts worth £35 million in colleges and schools this year.

The building firm, which has its headquarters in Harrogate Road, Greengates, has built a wide range of buildings - mainly in the north.

The firm, which has clocked up a turnover of £50 million this year, has just won a prestigious £16.5 million deal to build a 130,000 sq ft library, resource centre, bookstore and caf for Coventry University which is set to be finished in May 2000.

The building, which is open plan, will have a series of mirrors in the study area to make the most of natural light.

The company, which was founded in 1864, is now one of the largest contracts in the north and regularly beats off national competitors to win deals.

The firm has also won contracts with leisure group Whitbread, the Home Office and Bupa.

Nearer home, the company has just completed a £6.1 million contract for Bradford & Ilkley College which includes refurbishing the main office, teaching and public access areas.

The company is a specialist in refurbishing historic buildings and can prove this with a £4.8 million deal to refurbish the Grade II listed Victorian Baines Wing at Leeds University.

The contract started in July and includes the construction of a 17-metre high glass-fronted building to link student offices, accommodation and lecture rooms.

The firm has also recently completed new laboratories at Sheffield University in a deal worth £4 million; a new home, including lecture rooms and a performance auditorium for Leeds College of Music worth £3.7 million and the refurbishment of the Grade II listed Ramsden Building for Huddersfield University worth £700,000.
