One man died and another was injured after a car crashed 15ft down an embankment in Tong, Bradford.

The incident happened close to the Kings Arms pub in Westgate Hill Street just after 6.30pm yesterday.

Three men were rescued from the Ford Escort by fire crews and paramedics and were taken to Bradford Royal Infirmary. But one of them died.

Odsal Fire Station Officer Frank Hutchinson said: "There were three young lads in the car who I believe were coming home from a works party. They must have lost control of the car and it went off the road, through some trees and crashed down the embankment.

"It looks like the car spun round in the air and landed in the opposite direction. The driver of the car was very shocked but he didn't need medical treatment.

"The front-seat passenger was badly injured and only had a weak pulse when we put him in the ambulance.

"The car was completely crushed at the side where he was sitting and it looks like he took the brunt of the crash.

"The young man in the back seat had a broken arm, lacerations and bruises although he was conscious.''

Fire crews used generators to light up the area and made a walkway using ladders.

They assisted the paramedics getting the casualties into the ambulance. The road was closed for more than two hours.

Meanwhile, the driver of another car was injured after a collision with a lorry in Apperley Bridge.

The incident happened on Apperley Lane, outside Apperley Manor Hotel, just after 3pm yesterday. The car driver suffered minor injuries and was given a check-up at Leeds Infirmary.
