Hooker James Lowes is a front-runner to lead Bradford Bulls in their bid for a second Super League crown next season.

The role of team captain is vacant following the retirement of Aussie Graeme Bradley at the end of last season.

Coach Matthew Elliott has already made his choice but will not reveal his decision until the players report back for training on January 4.

"I don't think it will be a surprise," says Elliott. "We haven't had all the players together for one reason or another yet but Mike Forshaw will be back in after ankle surgery and David Boyle will also have arrived from Australia so that is the ideal time to let them know."

Lowes would appear to be the most natural choice with his combative style and ability to lead from the front, much in the Bradley style.

But there may be concern over his tendency to incur the wrath of referees for heatedly questioning decisions.

Others who seem likely to come under consideration are loose forward Steve McNamara, Mike Forshaw and newcomer Henry Paul.

The name of the club captain, currently Robbie Paul, will also be announced in the New Year.
