Little John 3
Yeadon Westfield 2
WESTFIELD visited Huddersfield side Little john in a bid to reach the last 16 in the County Cup for the first time.
The game called off the previous week was played on a heavy pitch which did not help either team to play any attractive football but an end to end encounter kept the spectators from both sides guessing who would come out on top.
Goalline clearance from Chew and O'Neill kept the visitors from conceding and the width of the crossbar denied Westfield at the other end when a shot from Gregson sadly bounced away to safety.
The home side's physical approach to the game was matched by great determination by all 11 Westfield players who felt that the game could be won.
However, Little John started the second-half strongly and a good run and shot left Dakin no chance and gave them the lead. Westfield came back well after this setback and John Schofield levelled with a well placed drive.
The referee then became the centre of attention when he gave the home side a penalty when a forward simply slipped in the wet conditions but to everyone's amazement the man in black pointed to the spot and Little John converted the kick.
This seemed to knock Westfield, who shortly afterwards conceded a third when a shot from inside the box crept past Dakin, who was impeded by an attacking player who stood in front of him in an offside position, but again the referee gave the advantage to the home side and allowed the goal to stand.
Westfield attacked again and saw the post save the home defence and when Peter Day was put through by Chippendale to run at the 'keeper he was blatantly and cynically brought down just outside the box but amazingly the referee produced only a yellow card to what should have been a red card offence. Westfield rallied again and were rewarded when substitute Winterburn scored from Chew's well flighted free-kick. Despite everyone pushing forward for the equaliser time ran out for the visitors who after a good team effort left the field feeling somewhat disappointed with the man in the middle.
This week sees a return to league matters with a home game against Esholt. Players meet 9.45am prompt.
