WITH the New Year almost upon us Project Guiseley are looking ahead to spring.
A number of volunteers spent an hour planting 500 daffodil bulbs on the grass area at the busy junction of Otley Road and Park Road, Guiseley.
Leading the volunteers were Couns Moira and Mike Dunn (Lab, Aireborough), former Liberal councillor Janet Brown and former Conservative councillor Richard Hughes-Rowlands, chairman of Guiseley project.
The initiative is one of the first actions of the recently formed Project Guiseley which aims to improve the environment and the appearance of Guiseley.
A Christmas tree with lights has been erected at the entrance to the town near Greenbottom.
The officers of the Project have met with officers of Leeds City Council and have agreed to enter Guiseley in the Britain in Bloom competition in the year 2000.
A public meeting is to be held in Guiseley at the end of January to form a committee to launch Guiseley into the competition.
Mr Hughes-Rowlandds commented: "Guiseley is a closely knit community and we are intent on putting the town on the map. It will involve a tremendous effort by local people to turn Guiseley into a district which can - as a start - win the regional finals of the Britain in Bloom contest."
The committee have been encouraged by the example of nearby Hawksworth Village, who this year won the competition in their category.
