A PROPOSAL to build student homes in a green belt area is being opposed by Horsforth Civic Society.
An outline plan to build a group of two storey student residences by Trinity and All Saints College in Brownberrie Lane, Horsforth, has been submitted to Leeds City Council.
But members of the civic society are unhappy with the proposal.
Sheila Barlow, the civic society's secretary, said: "The society has always maintained that there should be no intrusions into the green belt,
however small. Green belts were created around large conurbations to provide amenities for town dwellers to enjoy fresh air, the countryside and leisure activities."
"Although the society recognises that extra student accommodation is needed by Trinity and All Saints College, it is felt that if blocks of
student flats are allowed it could set a precedent for other intrusions into the green belt around Horsforth and the
society has written to the council's planning department to express this view."
Malcolm Redding, assistant principal (administration) at the college confirmed a planning application to build a group of two storey buildings had been submitted to the council.
"If outline planning application is approved then the plan has to go before full planning so building won't start before September 2000. The land in question has been identified by the city council for
residential development," he added.
