Villagers in Burley-in-Wharfedale are being offered the chance to buy specially made china mugs commemorating the new Millennium.

Burley Community Council will be selling the limited edition £5 mugs from January.

Meanwhile the Council has taken delivery of hundreds of earthenware mugs which will be given to every village youngster, aged 16 and under, in 2000.

The 1,700 earthenware and 600 china mugs both feature a design outlining the history of the Burley Pudding and featuring a picture of the Great Elm Tree under which it was served to villagers during feasts in medieval times.

The Council is also marking the Millennium by planning to set a new world record for the heaviest pudding. They aim to cook a five tonne version of the historic Burley Pudding.
