Police have issued a picture of the man they want to question in connection with a shooting at a Bradford pub in which a woman was seriously injured.

Detectives have launched a nationwide hunt for Stephen Flaherty, 39, who they say they want to interview about the incident at the Peel Park Hotel, Otley Road, Undercliffe, on Sunday night in which landlord's daughter Deena Contreras was shot in the chest and had to undergo emergency surgery.

And today it was revealed that two regulars in the pub which was full of festive drinkers, chased a man after the shooting.

As they struggled in the street, the men managed to wrestle the gun from the man who later fled. They took the handgun back to the pub where it was later recovered by police.

Detective Supt Stuart Hyde, who is leading the inquiry, said: "I would like to speak to Stephen Flaherty as a matter of urgency.

"Members of the public should not approach him, but should contact police immediately if they know his whereabouts."

Mr Flaherty is described as 5ft 8ins tall and police believe he could be staying with friends or relatives in the area.

Today as Deena was recovering in Bradford Royal Infirmary, her twin sister, Deborah Doran, 33, told how she was upstairs when the shooting happened.

"All I'm aware of is that a man was in the pub when an argument broke out. He went out and came back with a gun and my sister was unfortunate enough to get in the way.

"I came down in the aftermath of what happened. Deena was lying on the floor as everyone was waiting for the police and the ambulance to arrive."

She added that the man had been in the pub a few times but he was not a regular.

The pub was closed yesterday as landlord Brian Mitchell and his family were trying to come to terms with the shooting.

"We're all in a state of shock," added Mrs Doran.

"I don't think it's hit us all yet - we're just thanking God Deena's OK. She's very lucky - she could have been killed."

One of the locals who was in the pub at the time said there had been an argument between two men.

"All of a sudden there was a shot. Deena had been shot in the chest.

"There wasn't much blood at first but then she started bleeding heavily. There was blood everywhere."

Residents have also expressed their shock at the incident.

One said: "We heard lots of police cars and ambulances arriving at the pub, but we couldn't believe it when we were told what had happened.

"It's a terrible thing to have happened."

Detectives also want to trace any witnesses who were in the area at the time of the shooting. Det Supt Hyde can be reached at Bradford Central police on Bradford 373132.
