Yarnbury 31

Stocksbridge 5

ON a dismal day with wet conditions underfoot Yarnbury entertained Stocksbridge in the first round of the Yorkshire Shield.

With the efforts of last week's fixture in mind changes to the side were kept to a minimum with Trigg and Burton replacing the injured Rivett and Miller.

Lian Rigby also returned to the second row allowing Wayne Butterfield to return to his more accustomed role in the back row.

It did not take long for evergreen prop Paul Trigg to influence the game, as after five minutes a scrum was driven 15 yards to the line for scrum-half Stephen Lee to score.

Moments later, after some crisp handling, John Bramham slipped round his opposite number to score in the corner.

Both kicks were missed by Stephen Lee but he made ammends by converting the next two tries coming from a push-over by Butterfield and a further try from Bramham.

With 30 minutes gone Yarnbury found themselves 24 points in the lead and this led to a relaxing period of 20 minutes until the introduction of Steven Mather, who added a further try after scything through the defence from 20 metres. Lee added the conversion.

Stockbridge never gave in and were rewarded with a try late in the game. Yarnbury had put together a respectable performance with good scrummaging by the front row and some positive running by the backs, particularly McNulty and Thompson.
