Ilkley 1

Burley Trojans 2

TROJANS emerged victorious following a titanic struggle with neighbours Ilkley in the Wharfedale District Cup quarter-final on Saturday in front of a big crowd at Denton Road.

A late Rob Browne header clinched Trojans place in the semi-finals and the chance of a glamour tie.

As with last weeks' league encounter there was little to choose between the sides and it was always going to be a close one on call.

Trojans settled the better and dominated for long periods of the first-half without ever creating any clear cut opportunities.

In fact, it was the home side who could have gone ahead when Alan Stockdale ballooned over when well placed.

The visitors finally broke the deadlock midway through the second period with a strike from the prolific John Lofthouse.

Full-back Steve Wilkinson's free-kick was headed goalwards by Chris Connelly and Lofthouse applied the finishing touch from close range. Ilkley roared back and were soon on level terms when their substitute netted following a period of sustained pressure.

Trojans, with Phil Dodsworth and Man-of-the- Match Dave Collinson influential in midfield, pushed forward in search of a winner and, just as it appeared that extra-time was looming, Browne struck.

Phil Constantine's corner was directed to the far post and the big centre-half timed his run to perfection, his firm downward header giving the Ilkley 'keeper no chance.

TROJANS made it two wins in a row to consolidate their position in mid-table and exact revenge on their hosts who had dumped them out of the cup earlier in the month.

The home side took an early lead. However, James Goodison pulled Trojans level and then an own goal gave the visitors a half-time lead.

Trojans, playing with a new found confidence, and Iain Gibbons prominent in midfield, destroyed Thirsk with a three-goal salvo early in the second- half.

Goodison bagged his second from the penalty spot when younger brother Gareth was fouled. Not to be outdone Gareth Goodison notched the fourth before Stuart Forrest got in on the act.

The home side hit back with two quick goals as Trojans wobbled briefly before Forrest rounded things off with a couple of late strikes to complete his hat-trick and deservedly pick up Match Point.
