A family were left without central heating over Christmas after having their boiler serviced.

Mother-of-two Jan Bradley, 44, pictured, phoned Nottingham-based Elite Maintenance Services Ltd at the beginning of December to have the work done at her home in Keighley.

Since then, she says, she has had to heat water through an immersion heater and use gas fires and fan heaters to keep warm.

She says that on the evening after the work had been done - at a cost of £91 - she and her husband Peter, 52, returned to the house to find the kitchen full of gas.

"There was an horrendous smell of gas," she said.

"Luckily we had switched the timer off so the boiler wouldn't come on. If it had, or we had walked in with a cigarette alight, I hate to think what would have happened.''

And she says she is still waiting for the firm to fix the problem. A company spokesman said: "There appears to have been a misunderstanding on both the customer's and the company's side.

"However - regardless of liability - the company is carrying out all the work necessary to the customer's satisfaction to resolve the problem free of charge."
