An appeal for patrons to boost Ilkley Carnival has failed to net a single response.

Miggy Bailey, the carnival's president, made the appeal last month but still no-one has come forward. The disappointment comes after she launched an appeal for contributions towards festive lighting in the town - which generated just £5 in its first two months last year.

Mrs Bailey, clerk to Ilkley Parish Council, said: "I cannot honestly say I have had one person make an inquiry about becoming a carnival patron. It is a bit disappointing but I suppose people have had their minds on other things, such as Christmas."

But she did not believe there was any deep-rooted problem with people not wanting to become involved in the community.

"Many in the community are involved in the carnival through groups like the scouts, the Round Table and the Lions,'' she said. "But a lot of people are commuters and don't stay in town for a long time. However, over the years more and more people have participated in the carnival.''

More than 12,000 people attended last year's event. She added: "Being a patron doesn't necessarily mean having to donate large sums. The minimum is £10 and for that you get a good deal.''

Patrons gain free entrance to the carnival field and get to enjoy an afternoon in the VIP hospitality tent.
