Residents living near a college site where houses are to be built will be consulted by the developers.
Crest Homes (Northern) Ltd, which has won a contract to develop the Ilkley College land, had considered holding a public meeting to discuss the plans.
But instead it has decided to send copies of the consultation document to all residents living near the site.
And there will be a small exhibition of initial proposals for the scheme in Ilkley Library in the week beginning Monday, January 18.
The consultation document being sent to residents contains a questionnaire and freepost address enabling residents to express their views. The document will also be available at the Ilkley Library exhibition or by contacting Crest Homes.
The developer has also produced a video which will be presented to key bodies within the town, including councillors, the Civic Society, and historical groups.
A spokesman for Crest Homes (Northern) said: "After talking to a number of people within the town, it has become evident that a public meeting is not necessarily the best way to address the particular concerns of individuals within Ilkley.
"It is therefore our intention to register the view of everyone who contacts us and address each query or concern on an individual basis."
Anyone who would like to register their views or receive a copy of the consultation document when it is published in mid-January, should call Crest Homes on (01423) 501661.
Ilkley west parish councillor Heathcliffe Bowen, said: "I would think that a public meeting would be a better way of doing it but any consultation is welcome. Local people affected by any process should be informed. Our main concern is that adult education continues in the Wharfe Valley and we have been seeking assurances from the college authorities."
