Police are investigating an arson attack on a house at Braithwaite on New Year's Day.

A lounge window was smashed and lighted material pushed through in the early hours, setting fire to curtains.

The property, in Coronation Way, was unoccupied at the time. Police say that had anyone been asleep in the house when the attack occurred, the consequences could have been tragic.

Firefighters were quickly on the scene and they smashed down the front door to gain access. Crews wore breathing apparatus to tackle the blaze, which severely damaged the lounge.

In addition, the whole house was smoke-logged.

A fire service spokesman says: "When we arrived at the scene smoke was coming from the upper windows and we did not know at that stage if the house was occupied."

Police are seeking two people - described as having 'bobbed' hair - who were seen near the property around the time of the incident, about 4.30am.

They are also appealing for anyone else with information to come forward.

Sgt Allan Gee, of Keighley Police, says: "This is an extremely serious incident which could have resulted in tragedy.

"It is only through good fortune that no one was hurt or even killed."

No one was available at the house for comment this week.

Anyone with information should contact Keighley CID on 01535 617085 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
