A FINNISH army captain has pleaded guilty to causing the death of a 29-year-old woman in a head-on crash.

Dawn Harvey, from Ingleton, died more than three weeks after the Honda Civic she was travelling in was struck by Capt Jyri Kosola's Volvo on the A65 near Ingleton last July.

This week, Kosola, 31, who lives in Helsinki, walked into Bradford Crown Court with the aid of crutches and admitted causing Mrs Harvey's death by dangerous driving.

But his barrister, Martin Rutland, said that there was still a wide disparity about the course of dangerous driving.

Mr Rutland said Kosola did not appreciate it was the on-coming carriageway and expert evidence would have to be called on relevant sections of the Finnish Highway Code.

It is estimated that the next hearing will last two days, and Kosola was granted bail.

l A judge has ordered a motorist accused of causing the death of a cyclist by dangerous driving to surrender his licence.

Judge Arthur Hutchinson QC imposed the condition on 29-year-old Jonathan Melia's bail when he had his first appearance before Bradford Crown Court on Wednesday.

Melia, of Earl Street, Colne, denied causing the death of 47-year-old David Isles by dangerous driving and his trial is due to begin on April 19.

Mr Isles, of Bradford, died when his bicycle was in collision with a Vauxhall Corsa on the A59 near Carleton.
