THE generosity of warm hearted Wharfedale people has sent a hi-tech message of support to youngsters in Romania.

An appeal through Wharfedale Newpapers by Ilkley Rotary Club for donations of computers and printers won an overwhelming reaction from residents who bombarded members with 150 machines.

Desmond Longfellow, of the Rotary club, said they had been astounded by the massive response to the plea which was launched for just one school in the town of Barlad.

"It was terrific, we ended up with computers coming out of our ears. Eventually we were able to give 150 computers to all eight schools in the town," said Mr Longfellow.

The wagon commissioned by the Ilkley Rotarians arrived at an orphanage in Barlad in the early hours of Christmas Eve day, having driven through deep snow in the mountains of North Romania.

Mr Longfellow said the wagon was 'packed to the ginnels', not just with computers, but also food, essential warm clothing, toys, footballs and more than 5,000 writing pads for pupils.

He said: "We must say a big thank you to all the people of Ilkley, Burley-in-Wharfedale and the surrounding areas for their generosity. It was fantastic.

"All those at the orphanage and school send them their heartfelt thanks and wish them much happiness and good health in 1999.

"We in the Rotary Club of Ilkley join with them in their sentiments, for without their valued help, and the excellent publicity received from Wharfedale Newspapers, none of this would have been possible," he added.
