No charges will be brought in connection with the death of lorry driver Trevor Smith.

Mr Smith, 47, of West Croft, Oxenhope, died after a crash on the A59 at Osbaldeston, near Blackburn, on December 1.

Re-opening the inquest into his death, East Lancashire coroner Andre Rebello said: "It is highly unlikely that there will be any charges arising out of the death and therefore a date needs to be fixed for a full inquest."

The hearing was adjourned until today for a date to be set.

Mr Smith suffered multiple injuries in the accident which involved a Toyota car and another lorry travelling on the A59. The car spun out of control, hit a wall and rebounded into the road. The articulated lorry then travelled into the path of Mr Smith's lorry, with both vehicles finishing on their sides across the road and verge.

The accident happened on a stretch of road known as 'Coroner's Corridor' and was the second fatal accident to happen at the blackspot in the last eight months.

Mr Smith, who worked for Earby-based Manson Timber, was married with an 11-year-old daughter.
