Residents in two Wyke streets have joined forces to launch a petition urging Bradford Council to repair their pot-holed roads.

Neighbours in Barmby Street and Birkby Street are pressing the Council to fill the holes - dubbed "the Lakes" because they are filled with a sea of water and mud.

Householders say it is only a matter of time before a serious accident occurs and they are demanding urgent action. But the roads are unadopted and not maintained by the local authority.

And Bradford Council says it is the responsibility of residents to arrange for a contractor to do the work.

David Clark, of Barmby Street, is spearheading the campaign for change. He said: "We desperately need the roads fixed. A few days ago my grandson tripped and fell in the road. He cut his hand but it could have been more serious."

The Council says there are 1,500 unadopted roads across the city and its budget for adopting them is already committed for the next financial year.

Mr Clark says the problem affects at least another six roads in Wyke including nearby Ashfield Terrace.

"Vehicles cannot travel up and down the road without swerving to miss the large pot holes and muddy waters."

A Council highways spokesman said: "Any roads which are unadopted are the responsibility of the householder and each is responsible for maintaining the frontage outside their home.

"Any work such as filling in pot holes is the responsibility of the householder and they should arrange for a contractor to do the work. When we receive the petition it will go before the transportation, planning and design sub-committee. Roads can be added to the list to be adopted in future years."
