Angling: Consistency was the key for Team Normark who shot to the top of the Yorkshire Winter League after a superb performance on an out of sorts Ouse around York.

Despite having no section winners they cruised home with nearly 20 points to spare after recording 12 catchers out of 12. The next best was eight on a river still carrying four feet of coloured, ice cold water.

As expected it was odd bream that made all the difference. Nick Sutton (Anglers World) raised a few eyebrows by taking victory from an unfancied peg on Fulford Stones. Legering with lobworm he netted two slabs for a net of 6-12-0 worth over £200.

A few pegs upstream Armley's Mick Doyle feeder fished worm in the cable peg to take a brace of slabs scaling 5-12-0. Keith Gray (Anglers World) was third with two good skimmers on feeder and pinkie from the bay hole at Fulford scaling 3-12-0.

Best weight on the opposite bank went to fourth placed Mick Addinall (Anglers World) who had a single bream of 3-9-8 taken on pole and maggot below the rocky culvert in the Dunkey Woods.

Other prizewinners were Dennis Lemmon (Leeds) 3-5-0, Ricky Gaunt (Armley) 2-15-0, Geoff Wilmore (Armley) 2-1-8, Stan Haigh (Anglers World) 1-11-0, Tim Marshall (Castleford) 1-5-0 and Chris Bray (Abbey Match) 1-4-8.

Normark's victory on 94 moves them to joint top with Armley in the league on 40. The Leeds outfit took second on the day with 79. Anglers World were third on the day with 76 and are in the same place overall on 37.

Other leading places in the afternoon went to Team Bradford with 75, Abbey Match 69, York A 67, Metro 58, York B 44, Castleford 26, Leeds 23 and Aireborough 10.

Compared with the rest of the local river matches the 110 field were relatively spoiled.

There were only two catchers in Idle and Thackley's 30 pegger on the Swale at Swainby. Callum Evans was greedy, taking two chub for 6-1-0. Runner-up Charles Hardaker had a single gudgeon weighing a mighty one ounce!

On the Wharfe the story was no different for Wetherby's Open. Len Rose led with a single chub of 4-6-0. Dave Pitt had a 141/2oz roach and a 1oz perch taken by John Matthers was the only other fish to trouble the scalesman.

Nigel Hirst (Hirst Tackle) topped Bradford City's Open at Boroughbridge with a single chub of 4-13-8 taken from the Barge Field.

Ray Barraclough (Leeds) had a pair of smaller chub for second with 2-12-8. After Jim Cowgill's chub of 2-9-8 it was odd roach and perch with Kevin Moore 1-0-8,. Noel Speight 1-0-0 and Dave Pollitt 0-10-0 completing the frame.
