A devout Muslim who slaughtered three members of his family in a crazed Valentine's Day attack has been ordered to be detained indefinitely at Rampton Hospital.

Father-of-six Jhangir Hussain, 49, killed his wife Zamab Bi with a claw hammer before stabbing her seven times and cutting her throat.

He then stabbed to death his 18-year-old son Tanveer Hussain, who was trying to protect his 44-year-old mother, and his daughter Nazia Parveen, 16.

At Leeds Crown Court Hussain admitted the manslaughter his wife, son and daughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.

Mr Justice Harrison ordered him to be detained at Rampton Hospital indefinitely under the Mental Health Act.

Hussain's three other children, aged five, seven and nine, are being cared for by family in Birmingham.

The killings took place in Hussain's flat above Rama Fashions store in Leeds Road, Thornbury, Bradford, on February 14 last year.

Police found the bodies in a pile after Hussain telephoned the police to ask for medical help for his son. He admitted he had killed his wife and daughter.

The court heard that Hussain had carried out the horrific attack because he wrongly suspected his wife and daughter were having affairs.

Two days before they died, they had returned home from Pakistan and Hussain confronted the pair at Manchester Airport with a gun.

The court heard that pressed the trigger but the gun failed to go off.

Hussain had become resentful of his wife and daughter after he joined a Muslim sect called Awasia.

He became very superstitious and interested in magic.
