Golf: The finish of centenary year at West Bowling has marked the end of another golfing era in Bradford.
Secretary Mike Lynn has retired after seeing out the year, bringing to a close more than 30 years of involvement in golf administration.
"I decided it was time to put my feet up for a while. Maybe now I will get the chance to play a bit of golf myself," said Lynn, who is a life member at East Bierley, where he joined in 1957. He is also an honorary member at West Bowling for his services to Bradford golf.
After serving as captain at East Bierley in 1965, Lynn became competitions secretary and Friday Night League secretary in the late 60s and early 70s.
He was captain of the past captain's team in 1975 and also Bradford Union president in 1981. As a player, he was down to a handicap of four at one stage.
For ten years from 1986 he was secretary of the Bradford Union, doubling up as secretary-manager at West Bowling from 1989.
His post at West Bowling is being taken by Hedley Archer, who has left Northcliffe, where he was secretary for the past six years.
During that time he was responsible for the success of their annual Rabbits Open, which is regularly fully booked.
West Bowling has also seen the end of another historic link. Retiring president Bill Hird, who has held the post for the past nine years and has been a member at the club for 64 years, is the third generation of the family to hold the position of president.
l The bad weather hit Headley's golf sale last weekend, so it is being repeated tomorrow night, all day Saturday and up to 6pm on Sunday. Most items of golf equipment are on offer at half price or less with proceeds going towards clubhouse improvements.
l Bradford Union could have its 28th member a week today. The annual meeting on September 27 at Shipley will decide whether to accept the Marriott Hollins Hall Hotel at Baildon as its latest club. The new course is due to open this spring and its membership will depend on a successful application to join the Yorkshire Union.
