The Advertising Standards Authority has this week published the result of its investigation into a complaint objecting to an advertisement in the Keighley News for windows.
The adjudication is that the complaint was not upheld. The complaint centred on an advertisement which showed a selection of window frames with line drawings of bikini-clad women on either side. It continued 'Well Built' - 'Great Figures' - on windows, doors and conservatories. The complainant found the advertisement demeaning to women and therefore offensive.
The advertiser has apologised for the offence they caused.
The publishers - the Keighley News - told the ASA the advert had slipped through their checking procedures, and new guidelines have been introduced to ensure it doesn't happen again. I added that we had not received complaints but acknowledged that the advertisement was not entirely suitable for readers.
The Authority considered that, although drawings of women in their underwear with innuendos about women's bodies were tasteless, the advertisement was unlikely to cause serious or widespread offence.
