Guiseley Rangers continued their winning run when they travelled to Bradford last Saturday to play Dudley Hill Eagles in a Pennine League second vision match. Rangers gained their revenge as Dudley Hill narrowly won the previous game at Nunroyd Avenue by 29-22.
Since their last meeting Rangers have vastly improved and were determined to reverse last October's result which they did in fine style, emerging winners by 20-4. Last Saturday's result places Rangers at the top of the division two league table with 21 points, although Littleborough and Hillsborough are second and third placed with 20 and 19 points respectively, yet both have two games in hand.
The match began well for Rangers with a strong wind behind them when after only five minutes play second row forward Mike Smith went over for a try. Both teams were guilty of poor handling resulting in dropped passes and at the interval Rangers had a slender lead of four points to nil.
Rangers needed some inspiration and stalwart Eddie Cousins took the field in the second half, with Rangers soon on the scoreboard when following a good passing movement Jon Beanland crossed for a try
Eddie Cousins was involved in the next Guiseley score when his perfectly timed pass to Alex White was then handed on to Jon Beanland who went in for his second try. Alex White increased the score when he went over the line following a quickly taken tap penalty but then Dudley Hill siezed their opportunity and scored their only try of the match.
Joe Beanland scored the try of the match, completing his hat-trick when he took the ball from 40 metres out, went round several defenders to score behind the posts and to put the game out of reach of the home team.
Ranger's five tries were not converted; high winds and atrocious ground conditions did not contribute to successful goal-kicking, nonetheless, a good win.
Although registering yet another win Ranger's coach Tony Smith was not satisfied with his team's performance. Poor handling on many occasions made promising moves break down without advantage being gained and this fault must be rectified if Rangers are to hold their position in the league table.
