BURLEY TROJANS RESERVES 2 UNISON 4

BURLEY Trojans Reserves' miserable start to the New Year continued with a lack lustre performance at home to lowly Unison.

Against a side they had trounced 6-1 on the opening day of the season Trojans never looked like getting any reward.

The visitors settled well and launched a series of attacks which put the home defence under pressure. Stand-in 'keeper Stuart Forrest had to be at his sharpest to keep out a couple of efforts and on the one occasion he failed to gather a Unison forward amazingly headed wide from two yards.

Against the run of play Trojans went ahead on the half hour. Following good approach work from Jez Strong the hard working Iain Gibbons caused panic in the Unison defence.

The 'keeper in an attempt to clear only succeeded in strking his own cebtre-half and the ball rebounded into the unguarded net.

Trojans were unable to hang on to their lead with the visitors levelling from the penalty spot when full-back John Mutton pulled down a Unison forward.

Unison continued to dominate after the break and scored with an excellent strike within five minutes of the re-start.

They doubled their lead ten minutes later when a speculative shot deceived Forrest on the difficult surface.

The home side made changes and threw men forward to try and salvage something but they were caught on the break when a shot from the edge of the area rebounded off the bar and was nodded home by an unmarked forward.

Strong reduced the arrears when he muscled his way past a couple of defenders and steered the ball in from 12 yards but it was a little too late for Trojans.

l On Saturday Trojans will need to lift themselves for the long trip to league leaders Masham.

The first team game at home to Christ Church Old Boys was a victim of the weather last Saturday but this week they look forward to a home game against Wetherby Athletic Reserves in the Intermediate Cup which kicks-off at 1.30 pm.
