A SENIOR fire officer spoke this week about a lack of interest in a home fire prevention scheme.
Rawdon Station Commander Richard Moxon said about 3,000 leaflets offering advice on fire safety had been delivered to homes in Guiseley, Rawdon, Yeadon and Otley, but the response to them had been disappointing.
"Between 80 and 85 per cent of fire deaths occur in the home and we need to tackle this problem by visiting people in their homes, make an inspection and give away free smoke alarms," he said.
"We started offering advice last year but there has been no take up by the public.
"There is a possibility that they have not taken up our offer because they don't want strangers in their home.
"Nevertheless we are still hoping people will agree for a fire officer to visit them and offer them advice.," he said.
"Leaflets have again been delivered in Guiseley, Rawdon, Yeadon, and a few in Otley and Menston. We are quite willing to call on people at a time to suit them," he added.
