Paul Jewell writes: I think the game was a case of 'What might have been' for us. We started really well and had a few chances which we should have taken. But it was pleasing that we created those chances.
And I think their first goal was a bit lucky because Gary Walsh saved the initial shot only for it to fall kindly for Dietmar Hamann to score. I didn't think we deserved to be behind at half-time.
We hit the post just before half-time before missing a great chance to make it 1-1 only for Shearer to make it 2-0 within a few seconds from a goal-kick.
We should have been level and yet, all of a sudden, we were two goals behind. I suppose that is why Alan Shearer gets paid so much.
You have to take your chances against Premiership opposition and this game has proved that.
If it had been 1-1 their crowd would get edgy and who knows what might have happened. But it was just not to be and we have to look forward.
I thought we kept the ball well and created some good chances in the first half. I can't fault the commitment of my side. What we did lack was a cutting edge at times, which was frustrating.
Other than that, I felt we matched Newcastle. I think the scoreline flattered them but if you don't take your chances then you will be punished.
We have to get on and look forward to our next game - which is the most important one now.
