A visionary plan to improve equal opportunities in Bradford was launched last night.
The Equal Opportunities Committee of Bradford & District Training & Enterprise Council unveiled an ambitious 32-page local strategy document.
The TEC will lead the way to raise skill levels, tackle discrimination, create jobs, bring about a mix of workforce in firms and make sure that the TEC's Equal Opportunities Committee plays a vital role in this area.
The plan comes after consultation with the Equal Opportunities Committee, which includes 20 representatives from outside bodies. The document will be used to carry out further consultation with a wider group of local people.
It shows that while 2,156 young white people started on training programmes last year, only 558 started from the ethnic minorities. And 1,201 white adults started on training schemes with but 502 from the ethnic minorities.
Acting committee chairman Tim Blott - a TEC director and managing director of Bradford & District Newspapers - said: "We felt it was time for a new, action-led initiative to harness the talents and skills of our diverse community.
"Too often in the past Bradford's ethnic mix has been seen as negative. It is time we woke up and realised the enormous potential we have in our midst."
TEC chairman Howard Bell added: "Our city boasts a bright mosaic of cultures, religions and lifestyles. We are firmly committed to providing local solutions to local needs which I believe can be achieved through this strategy."
