A new Farmers' Market could be set up in Keighley offering locally-grown produce inc-luding organic food.
Local producers have teamed up with West Yorkshire Organic Group to run several of the markets across the district. Cllr Malcolm Slater, who represents Keighley North ward, is helping them find suitable venues for three pilot markets in the town this year. Farmers' Markets have been successful in other parts of the country and attracted extra shoppers to towns.
Spokesman Paul Lowing says producers can sell only their own produce direct to customers, so everything has been made, raised, grown or caught locally. He says: "Customers are able to find out how their food has been produced and producers can offer a variety of different or unusual produce, or supply fresh foods from their farms or gardens."
An inaugural market will be held in Bradford on Saturday, April 24, and eventually regular farmers' markets could be held in the city's new Rawson Market.
A new organisation is being formed in the district to run regular markets, and hopes to link up with Bradford Environmental Action Trust.
