Amateur Rugby League: Queensbury overcame Clayton 21-13 in a titanic clash at Hill Top to win a place in the final of the Pennine Presidents Cup.

The match was a splendid example of amateur rugby league at its best as the two keen rivals gave their all..

Clayton, playing up the slope, were well in charge in the opening 25 minutes and took the lead with a Darren Collins drop goal.

'Bury second row forward Matthew Galtress then made a darting run through the middle to send stand off Lee Charlton cantering to the sticks.

Full back Martin Potts added the extras and made no mistake with a penalty two minutes later to give his side an 8-1 lead.

Queensbury's purple patch continued when Darren Brown cut inside from the wing to beat three defenders to score.

Scrum half Carl Smith closed the half when he jinked his way over to make it 16-1.

Clayton knew that an early second half score was vital and centre Chris Parr duly obliged when he stormed through at speed to score near enough in to leave Adam Mitchell with an easy conversion.

Scott Pendlebury then stamped his growing authority on the game when he ran across the defence and when a gap opened up he raced under the posts. Mitchell again converted to make the score 16-13.

Queensbury loose forward Danny Wilcock forced his way over, but his effort was ruled out, and Clayton winger Martin Redgrave dived over in the corner only for Super League referee Tony Martin to rule he had failed to ground the ball correctly.

'Bury's Steve Gallagher eased the mounting pressure with a drop goal and three minutes into injury time substitute Gareth McKinley crossed in the corner to give his side a berth in next month's final at Parry Lane.

It was a double celebration at Hill Top as Queensbury A reached the final of the Pennine Shipley Trophy after a 36-28 win at Underbank Rangers A.

'Bury looked to be in trouble when they trailed 18-8 at the interval with a try by forward Ian Thorpe plus two goals from Shaun Fallon and their task was made more difficult when they lost scrum half Matthew Cooper with a twisted ankle.

'Bury, lacking several regulars, looked to be suffering from the heat against their heavier opponents, but the rallied to put themselves back in the game with Thorpe posting his second try quickly followed by another one from stand off Andy Thornton. Fallon converted both.

Centre Neil Hobson dived over from a play the ball and hooker Luke Cooper finished off a sparkling move to score wide out.

Fallon converted one of them and posted a penalty.

Underbank fought back to make the score 28-30 before loose forward Jason Hargreave settled the tie with a try which Fallon converted with the last kick of the game.

West Bowling A made it an all Bradford final with a 42-10 win over Sowerby Bridge Robins A at Bankfoot. Bowling's emergency scrum half Ian Wormald was the man of the match and crowned a fine display with a try.

The biggest cheer of the afternoon, however, was reserved for veteran centre Gary Stephenson who intercepted and had the daunting task of racing eighty metres to the line.

He followed up with another touchdown and was joined on the score sheet by Ryan Hunkin, Chris Makowski, Dean Minchella and Steve Carter. Mark Dunning kicked seven goals.

In the Premier Division, West Bowling moved joint top following a 38-20 win at Sowerby Bridge Robins.
