A national motoring organisation has put pressure on the Government transport chiefs to clear up a muddle over mistakes in the Highway Code.
The move by the Automobile Association came after Shipley driving test instructor Paul Stephenson found two errors in the latest edition of the code.
When he wrote to the Driving Standards Agency pointing them out he received a letter confirming his findings which also said the agency was looking at amending the text. Officials from the Department of Environment, Transport and the Regions are at loggerheads with the DSA.
An AA spokesman said: "We hope the DoT resolves the matter as quickly as possible."
Mr Stephenson, who worked as a driving test examiner for the Department of Transport for 30 years, spotted a mistake in the 1993 Highway Code and one million copies were altered.
The errors he found in the latest edition concern a section about the use of fog lights when visibility is seriously reduced. Paragraph 201 of the code says: "You may also use front or rear fog lights (In addition to headlights)" whereas the law states it should be "instead" of headlights.
More importantly in Paragraph 162 the advice given when taking any intermediate left turn when you are over half way round a roundabout was incorrect as it instructed the driver to remain in the left hand lane.
A DETR spokesman said: "The letter from the Driving Standards Agency was premature in suggesting that decisions have been made on whether this or any part of the Code requires amendment."
