Old Brodleians 32, Keighley 8
Keighley slipped into the relegation danger zone with a slipshod performance at Hipperholme.
There was little to suggest the final outcome in the early stages of the game during which Keighley called most of the shots and with a little more composure would have created a potential match winning lead.
A good run by wingman John Hinchliffe after a clever pass by flanker Michael Feather took play almost to the Brodleians line from where stand off Chris Barker landed an early penalty goal. Keighley maintained the pressure forcing a series of scrums on the line. Their attempts at push over tries came to nothing and a change in tactics saw Hinchliffe spill a try scoring pass on the left before a change in direction led to wingman Kevin Young being thwarted on the line on the opposite wing.
These setbacks seemed to unsettle Keighley and the homesick grabbed tries by centre Jason Carol and No 6 Andrew Crabtree in rare excursions into the Keighley half as the home back row exploited some weak tackling by the visitors.
Keighley fell further behind to a penalty goal by Pentelow after referee Jay Price reversed a decision in Keighley's favour following an indiscretion by scrum half Martin Wren and their plight deepened just before half time when No 8 Oliver Ackroyd, showing a remarkable turn of speed for a man of his sturdy build, beat several tackles on a diagonal run to the line for a fine try converted by Pentelow.
Facing a deficit of 18 points and the notoriousBrodleians slope in the second half Keighley quite literally had an uphill struggle on their hands, but a close range try by forward Simon Atkin after a line out take by Darren Close gave them heart. Again they had territorial advantage for much of the half, but could make little progress against some firm tackling. A breakaway try by full back David Stoyles sealed their fate with the impressive Ackroyd touching down his side's fifth try late in the game.
Keighley's away form in the league has been disastrous having lost all but one of the fixtures. A home win in the final league match on April 17 against Beverley is essential to guarantee survival in league North East One.
Bramley Phoenix 12
Keighley A 26
Keighley's second team gained a splendid win on Monday evening against Bramley in the first round of the Aire Wharfe Cup.
Flanker Ieaun Morgan grabbed two tries and wingsman John Flaherty and John Hinchlife a try apiece in a fine all round performance.
Bramley's threatened second half revival was subdued by some fine tackling by Keighley in the backs and their young inexperienced pack stood up well against the heavier home forwards with colt Ben Lazenby impressive in the lines.
Keighley's points taotal was completed by two penalty goals by centre Michael Scarborough and a drop goal by stand off Chris Barker.
Bramley's tries came from Andy Ellis and Paul Cromack with Dave Cooper adding a conversion.
n Keighley Under-11's were at their best after a slow start against Morley.
The Keighley forwards took time to rally, but after weathering an early storm they began to use the ball they won to great effect. some brilliant handling brought two tries for Oliver Robinson, Martin Heaton deserved his try which capped a workmanlike performance. Tom Bleasdale converted two of the tries.
Liam McGee's tackling and Scott Dyson's hard graft helped a Keighley team performance take a 19-14 victory.
