Further action has been demanded to help children cross Keighley's busy West Lane on their way to St Andrew's First School.
Parents and residents have sent a petition to Bradford council calling for a zebra crossing near the Lustre Street junction. Almost 20 people, including four child pedestrians, have been injured in 15 accidents over the past five years on a 200-metre stretch of West Lane.
Recent safety work has included a pedestrian refuge near the junction with Devonshire Street West, warning signs and hatched road markings. At least one accident has occurred since the work was completed in February of last year.
Roads experts say the current level of casualties is too low to justify spending money from the council's Casualty Reduction Programme. They suggest asking Keighley Area Panel, which has its own road improvements budget, to fund the proposed crossing.
The work could also be included in the council's £150,000 annual pedestrian crossings programme, which is being decided on Wednesday.
