A man has called for a pelican crossing outside a Keighley primary school.
Prospective Tory councillor Arshed Majeed says a crossing is urgently needed near St Anne's School in North Street. He has two children at the school.
Mr Majeed believes Bradford council planners should think carefully about the location of any traffic controls in its new plans for North Street. "Parents are very concerned," he says. "Hundreds of children cross that road every day on their way to St Anne's and Highfield schools. Planners have suggested traffic lights at the junction of North Street and Spring Gardens Lane. There have already been a few near misses and I believe that this will still be a dangerous junction. If a crossing is to be provided then it should be just outside the school."
Around 1,000 names have been gathered on a petition in support of the crossing outside the school which Mr Majeed is to present to Bradford council.
Major improvement plans have already been announced for Keighley town centre. A range of changes have been proposed to speed up traffic flow, improve bus services and make it easier for pedestrians to get about. The suggestions include new traffic lights and crossings on Cavendish Street and North Street and the widening of East Parade and a re-vamped bus station.
Detailed plans for the new schemes are currently being drawn up and public consultation will take place.
