A PLAN to turn an Ilkley college building into flats looks set to get the go-ahead today despite a last minute attempt to block it.

The plan to turn student accommodation at Hillside, Crossbeck Road, into appartments was set to be fast-tracked by planning officers before objectors stepped in last week.

The application will now go before the Keighley area planning committee but officers have recommended approval.

A report to the committee says that six objections have been received. Although Ilkley Parish Council has recommended approval, Ilkley Civic Society have objected because members think that there are not enough car parking spaces for 18 flats.

Crest Homes (Northern) Ltd want to develop Hillside, Westwood on Queens Road, and the main college campus into housing.

Objectors are worried that the proposed access to Hillside is too close to the bend in Crossbeck Road, resulting in traffic dangers.

They also feel that the site has poor drainage and removing green areas around the building would not be in keeping with the town's Conservation Area.

The committee report says: "The proposal will retain the building in beneficial use without any unsympathetic alterations. In principle a residential use is acceptable and fits well with the surrounding properties."
