City central defender Andy O'Brien looks set to choose the Republic of Ireland - despite having played for England Under-21s this season.
O'Brien has dual qualification because his father is Irish and played for England Under-21s in the friendly international with France at Derby in February.
But he has told coach Peter Taylor that the intense competition for places with the likes of Matthew Upson, Wes Brown, Jonathan Woodgate and Danny Mills will restrict his opportunities.
As a result he is to try his luck instead with the Republic after being included in their under-21 squad for the international with Sweden at Birr, Co Offally, on April 27.
Taylor said: "If he goes along the route of committing himself to the Republic he might play more, and I understand that and have no argument with his thinking."
