The mother of a four-year-old girl knocked down by a car has welcomed a move to put speed bumps in the road where the accident happened.

Tayah Lunn had more than 100 stitches to wounds to her face after she was struck by the vehicle outside her home in Flinton Grove on the Fagley Estate.

Bradford Council's Highways Sub-committee has now approved the £37,000 scheme after it received a 122-signature petition from the Fagley Tenants' and Residents' Association demanding action.

It has allocated £17,500 from its casualty reduction programme towards the cost and a bid has been put in to the Single Regeneration Budget to cover the balance.

Mum Dawn Lunn said: "I'm completely in favour of the humps and hopefully it'll mean no-one will have to go through what I had to.

"This road is just too busy and kids are always playing on it. A lot of traffic comes off Harrogate Road down Fagley Lane into the estate.

"Ideally it would be better if they could put in full-length speed humps because I've seen cars zig-zag over the humps with spaces in between them."

Highways sub-committee chairman Councillor Phil Thornton said no decision had been made on what type of humps would be used.

He said: "We need to take action to stop motorists speeding through this area. In the last five years there have been 21 injury accidents involving 23 casualties.

"We've put up £17,500 towards the cost of the project to get the ball rolling so hopefully SRB will match fund it."

The sub-committee has also asked its engineers to carry out a safety survey of the junction of Gain Lane and Fagley Road after it received a 632-signature petition from the Fagley Village Forum.
