THE proposed new sports academy for Ilkley could be tailor-made to suit the needs of Ilkley's youngsters, according to the brains behind the plan.
Shipley-based businessman Brendan Larkin, who has submitted a planning application to build the academy on Dansk Way, off Leeds Road, said he would like to hear from anyone in the area with ideas on youth development in the town.
Since the plan was announced in last week's Gazette, Mr Larkin said he had already been contacted about the possibility of including an in-line skating and skateboarding area in the development.
"I wonder if there are any more schemes which could be considered. It seems to be getting a very positive reaction and it is long overdue," said Mr Larkin.
If planning permission is granted, Mr Larkin says that he hoped the academy could be built by July this year.
Mr Larkin said that the academy could be just one of more to be built in the area.
He is negotiating for more sites in Guiseley, Menston, Otley and Harrogate.
The motto of the sports academy is 'fun in an organised manner' and the facility will be designed to ensure children of the same ability levels compete with each other and to encourage children to develop in all sports.
Ilkley Civic Society chairman Bob Tilley said that the idea for the privately-run sports centre filled in a gap left by a lack of funding in the
public sector.
Mr Larkin said that anyone who wanted to contribute to sports development in the area or had any ideas about the proposed Youth Sports Academy should call him on 01274 531862.
