What stuff and nonsense. People power seems to have finally won the day in the battle for safety measures at an accident blackspot.

Highways officials at Bradford Council have finally agreed with the campaigners that the junction of Hebden Road and Brow Top Road could be made more safe.

Hats should be raised to the Haworth Road Safety Action Group, which is glad that common sense has prevailed.

Once again a serious question mark hangs over the designers of the road, which reopened at the beginning of March. It was part of the £6 million project to halt subsidence along the road.

The campaigners wanted the council to implement the safety measures in tandem with the work on the road.

At the time of the protests we challenged the claim that the road was a potential death trap, stating it was scaremongering.

The highways experts had given us assurances that all necessary safety measures had been considered, put in place, stating that they could do nothing to prevent accidents caused by bad driving.

We are not above taking our words back. As for the council - they are singing a different tune. Cllr Latif Darr, chairman of Bradford council's transportation, planning and design committee, now talks of various plans being on the drawing board which will be implemented if they are acceptable to the people.

Reassuring statements are also being made by Cllr Mike Young.

If it is now so blatantly obvious that road safety measures were needed why were they not included in the first place? It seems the £40,000 cost can be found like magic. Only a hardened cynic would go down the route of elections being just round the corner.
