A mother of two has hit out at plans to drive a road through a Yeadon cul-de-sac which she says will put children's lives at risk.

Janet Cartwright is one of many residents in Crofters Lea protesting against the road which will provide access to four new homes proposed for meadow land adjoining their estate.

They are not objecting to the houses but they are furious that Leeds City Council bosses will not consider a different route.

Mrs Cartwright said: "At the end of the day yes, build there, but consider children's lives.

"The road is horrendous and although we have complained to the police, they say there is nothing they can do about it."

Residents formed a protest group last year to highlight the problems already caused by heavy traffic on Crofters Lea, sending 82 letters of objection to the Council.

They said their road was already chaotic when parents dropped off and picked up children from Westfield Junior and SS Peter and Paul RC schools.

But the City Council's plans west sub-committee has approved the plan in principle, though it will be referred to the Department of the Environment because land is not earmarked for residential development.
