Work on repairs costing in the region of £263,000 to Yeadon Town Hall should start once tenders have been approved.

The town hall, a 19th century listed building, was closed in December because the existing electrical system was too dangerous for it to remain open.

Users of the town hall are concerned that nothing seems to have been done during the past few months.

But a spokesman for Leeds City Council said: "The current position is that the Council is seeking tenders from companies to carry out the necessary work. This process is currently on schedule and we should receive tenders shortly."

The proposed programme of electrical works includes improvements to lighting, electrical distribution, the fire alarm system, specialist theatre lighting and sound, security, CCTV and modifications to and upgrading of the passenger lift.

In addition to the electrical works, Aireborough ward members have indicated their willingness to fund a decorative scheme within the main hall from their ward based initiatives allocation.

It is anticipated this work will be carried out in the summer following the main electrical contract.

Users of the town hall are hoping that the work will be completed by the end of August. Some amateur operatic societies are due to begin rehearsals for their major productions.
