Cycling: After showing some good early season form Bradford rider Martin Russell (Paul Milnes RT) won the 34-mile Bronte Wheelers Road Race at Allerton on Sunday.
In a three-man finish Russell beat Richard Alhadeff (West Yorkshire Police) and Brendan Currie (Chesterfield Coureurs). The trio finished just ahead of Dave Micklethwaite (Sowerby Brothers RT) and Dave Stevens (Leeds Premier) and Sean Smith (Halifax Imps).
It was a busy and successful weekend for Alhadeff who won the Yorkshire Cycling Federation Association 25 on a course on the A1 in North Yorkshire winning in 55-29 ahead of Mike Shacklock (Otley CC) 55-47 and Keighley rider Tim Horton (Halifax RC) 55-52. With Tony Selby seventh in 58-17 and veteran Geoff Hick clocking 1-5-47 Otley CC took the team award.
In a hotly disputed sprint finish to the latest round of the Peter Fryer Trophy competition for veteran riders former Olympic medallist Ian Hallam (CCA Eurotel) got the verdict at the end of the Halifax Imperial Wheelers event at Norland on the moors above Halifax. Martin Eadon (Ace RT) was placed second then claimed long and loud that he was the winner.
However as all four judges had placed him second behind Hallam he had to accept the official result and went away somewhat disgruntled.
Third place at Halifax went to Gary Hill (Dinnington RC).
Maurice Hope (Peter Read Racing) won the Yorkshire Road Club open 25 at Walshford. Hope was the only man to beat 57 minutes winning in 56-11 from his own team-mate Joel Wainman who finished in 57-40 followed by Morley CC veteran Laurie Holmes in 57-50.
Doncaster rider John Tanner (Pro Vision-Planet X) won the latest round of the season-long Premier Calendar competition at Welwin relegating the unsponsored Andy Lyons into second place with reigning national road race champion Matt Stephens (Harrods) into third place three seconds adrift.
Continuing his policy of mixing road and mountain bike racing Gargrave rider Chris Young finished third in the latest round of the Northern Area Mountain Bike series at Stokesley on Teesside.
At the end of the two hour race he was well down on top international Ian Cuthbertson who rides for the World Class Performance Plan sponsored by the British Cycling Federation. Last year Young won the series overall.
