Legendary DJ John Peel is to visit Saltaire to help celebrate an historic church anniversary.
The veteran radio star, one of the most important figures in popular music over the last 25 years, has accepted an invitation from St Peter's Church, Moorhead Lane, Shipley, to take part in its 90th birthday celebration party at Victoria Hall next Saturday.
John was invited by St Peter's vicar the Reverend Chris Edmondson when he discovered the DJ's wife Sheila was born in Saltaire and still has close family links in the area.
John, awarded the OBE for his contribution to music, is also said to be found regularly at the bar in Fanny's Pub, Saltaire.
Mr Edmondson, said: "We were delighted when John agreed to come along. There can be few people who know more about music over the last 30 years and it will be tremendous to have him sharing in the evening with us."
During the party, which will feature music from each of the nine decades of the church's existence, John will be interviewed by Mr Edmondson and will also be handing out raffle prizes. And to get into the mood for the party, St Peter's has even booked a dance teacher next week to give lessons on the rudiments of the waltz, the Charleston and jive.
The party will kick off a week-long catalogue of events which will culminate in a visit to St Peter's by the Archbishop of York, Dr David Hope, on Sunday May 8.
Mr Edmondson, said: "We are really looking forward to the Archbishop's visit, as well as the rest of the week. These events will be a real opportunity to celebrate what has happened over the year and particularly the people whose lives have been touched by the ministry of St Peter's and the community here."
Other event planned include a fun day in Roberts Park on Bank Holiday Monday and a flower festival on May 8 and 9. Mr Edmondson said: "The things that are happening during this week will just be the start of our celebrations, with other events planned throughout the year."
