Bradford Bulls star Brian McDermott, pictured - convicted of thumping a teenager in a street incident - has been ordered to do more work with the public by magistrates and his club.

The 29-year-old Great Britain rugby league player was given an 80-hour community service order by Leeds magistrates yesterday and told to pay his victim, 17-year-old David Gellan, £1,000 compensation for the injuries he received.

Magistrates heard McDermott and a woman were in Vicar Lane in Leeds early on October 6 last year. McDermott was involved in an altercation with Mr Gellan after McDermott called a woman in Mr Gellan's group "a slut".

McDermott, of Aberford Road, Wakefield, was convicted of causing Mr Gellan actual bodily harm - a charge he denied.

His solicitor Sean Cluderay, said McDermott had received "a kicking" during the incident.

Sentencing him, chairman of the bench David Kaye said McDermott's voluntary work visiting Bradford hospitals had been taken into consideration.

And Bulls chairman Chris Caisley revealed the club held its own internal hearing and upped McDermott's voluntary work for the public. He said the club saw this as penalising McDermott while benefiting the community.
