1m move to new site
A school that was set to shut just one year ago will start the new millennium in a new building.Ghyll Royd School in Ilkley was saved from closure last August when an anonymous donor stepped in with a \'a31 million gift.
The 110-year-old school has now announced that it will abandon its current Grove Road site - believed to be worth \'a31 million - to a development of luxury homes and use the cash to fund major re
furbishment of a new school building in Burley-in-Wharfedale.Headteacher Jennifer Bonner said: \ldblquote Everybody is absolutely delighted. It is a great move for the school.\rdblquote
The independent school for two to 11-year-old boys will relocate to Greystones Manor in January 2000 after major refurbishment, bringing the school under one roof instead of in several buildings, as at present.
The school has 60 boys, but it is hoped numbers will swell to around 100. Ghyll Royd\rquote s future looked rocky last year when the former owners, Michael and Eileen Shepherd, announced their retirement.
A charitable trust, The Ghyll Royd Association, was set up to keep open the school which counts professional golfer Colin Montgomerie among its old boys.Meanwhile, Tony Paler, sales and marketing director for Victor Homes, said that the Ghy
ll Royd site would be used for a multi-million pound development for detached luxury houses.Mr Paler said: \ldblquote It is one of the premier addresses in Ilkley and we will be submitting to develop the site in keeping with the surrounding area.
\rdblquote The Ghyll Royd building would have to be demolished and that he hoped to see workers on site next year.
Parish councillor Audrey Brand, said that she would have to reserve judgement on any new development until she had seen detailed plans for the new housesBut she said: \ldblquote
I would say that Ilkley is giving up too many of its older buildings for new developments and it\rquote s changing the character of the town.\rdblquote
