SUPPORTERS of Ilkley's Ardenlea Marie Curie Centre have poured almost £250,000 into its coffers during the past fundraising year.
Olicanians and fundraisers from outside the town have been praised for their efforts in making sure it has been 'business as usual' for the Queens Drive-based centre.
When Marie Curie Cancer Care confirmed plans to relocate the Ardenlea Centre to Bradford, the woman heading the fundraising team in Ilkley admitted that she was slightly anxious to see how people would react - would the money dry up?
Thankfully, the money has not dried up and has continued to flow in. Brenda Doyle told the Gazette this week how pleased she was to report the continuing generosity of fundraisers.
Mrs Doyle said: "This past year has seen some fantastic fundraising. What really pleases us is the fact that so many people come to us with ideas, as well as taking part in the events organised by Marie Curie."
The Ardenlea fundraiser paid tribute to the range of groups and individuals who had raised money.
"It is wonderful to look back on the past year and remember just what people have done to raise money for Ardenlea," she said.
Mrs Doyle said one of the highlights of the fundraising year had been the efforts by the family and friends of Ilkley's James Parrish - a young man who lost his battle with cancer last year.
Mr Parrish's friends organised a charity kissathon in Ilkley, which attracted a great deal of positive publicity and brought the money rolling in.
"It is fantastic to see young people getting involved in fundraising," she said. "Cancer is something which hits all age groups," she said.
Ardenlea's doors will probably close in the autumn of next year but Mrs Doyle has made it clear, Marie Curie will not be shutting its doors on the people of Ilkley.
"Our home care team will remain in Ilkley and the fundraising will continue in the town," she said.
