A COMMUNITY appeal is being launched this week to raise funds for a new Easter cross to mark the millennium.
The scheme was announced last weekend at a church breakfast in Otley and aims to collect some £2,000 through public donations and fundraising events.
It is being run by the church council and was begun in response to the swell of support in and around the town to the annual placing of the cross on the Chevin.
Appeal coordinator Ron Sweeney, who was one of the team who helped plan and erect the original cross in 1968, said: "Despite vandalism, storms and the wear and tear of the years, the cross has played a large part in the life of Otley and it is intended that this will continue in the new millennium.
"The subscription will give everyone a chance to give and the cross will then belong to Otley and not just one particular group."
Collection tins are being handed to outlets throughout Otley, including the Wharfedale Observer office at 9 Orchard Gate, where donations can be made.
Money can also be given at Barclays Bank, Manor Square, with cheques made payable to the Chevin Cross Appeal.
