Worshippers at Long Lee Methodist Church have raised almost £10,000 for a major refurbishment scheme.
Church bosses plan to renovate and modernise the building for the new millennium. The project includes the installation of a new heating system, replacement floorcoverings, updated kitchen facilities and redecoration. Around £36,000 is needed to complete the scheme.
Forthcoming fundraising events include a goods auction at the church next Saturday, May 15. Other activities in the pipeline are a fashion show, barbecue, garden party, a talent and gift weekend, and concerts by a male-voice choir and brass band.
Spokeswoman Pauline Ainley says: "The scheme was initiated by the need to replace the current worn and noisy heating system with a more practical and quiet installation. This will cause considerable disturbance to the flooring, plasterwork, decorations etc so it seemed sensible to extend the refurbishment to cover other necessities."
"The membership is putting a great deal of effort into the fundraising. There is usually a social event every month."
Groups which meet at the church include Slimming World, parents and toddlers, youth clubs, a Townswomen's Guild and fellowships.
