A charity worker has spoken of his terror after he was caught in severe flooding in Sri Lanka while trying to deliver supplies, donated by T& A readers, to needy children.
Ernest Cowley of Bierley was on his 22nd trip to the country equipped with more than 250lbs of stationery and books for youngsters living in the country.
He said: "It was quite terrifying as you could see people's home just full of water and then you would see their possessions passing you in the street."
Mr Cowley had seven suitcases of pens, paper and books - many of which were donated by T&A readers - for the children.
He said: "The children's faces just light up when you bring the goods. They all want to greet you."
Mr Cowley who is already planning for his next trip later this year also visited a place known as Kagella, which is where the award-winning film Bridge on the River Kwai was shot by director David Lean,
"The surroundings were just like the film and we even saw where the actors had stayed and met people who had parts in the film," he said.
The campaign was set up in memory of his Sri Lankan friend Soma Weerasinge, who was killed in a car crash five years ago.
The memorial trust provides gifts for those aged between five and 15.
Mr Cowley is to visit Sri Lanka later this year. Anyone wanting to donate stationery equipment should call him on (01274) 402881.
