Devices described as man traps have been found on a cycle route in Skipton.
Flat metal plates with inch-long spikes and 18-inch metal poles attached to one end have been recovered from ground at the top of Shortbank Road, frequently used by children, mountain bikers and trial bikers.
PC Chris Howarth, of Skipton police, said they could inflict a punctured heart or lung if anyone fell on them.
He added that he thought the devices were home-made specifically for the purpose of deterring bikers from the land.
Police were alerted to the spikes by a woman whose son had been cycling in the area and found one of the devices. They recovered 18 but believe more have been laid.
The land is privately owned and police are in the process of contacting the proprietor to see if he has any information.
PC Howarth said bikers on the land had been pulling them out of the ground for about a month now, but when they went back a week later they had been replaced.
So far the devices - similar to police stinger devices used to halt cars - have been found just off the footpath in woods, with just the spikes visible.
PC Howarth appealed for anyone with information to contact him on (01756) 793377.
